Gornergletscher

Virtual excursion to Colle Gnifetti

On the 4452m high firn saddle of Colle Gnifetti, in the highest part of Grenz- and Gornergletscher, firn layers are deposited which undergo little melting during summer and cool to very low temperatures during winter. In the course of decades and centuries a natural climate archive has formed. Scientists have drilled into, and taken samples of the very old ice. This presentation shows how, in 1982, we measured accumulation patterns around the drillsite.
